Clapboard siding in the United States was originated by Native Americans that used the timber from their land to build their dwellings. This type of siding was popular in Europe where frame construction was dominant. This type of siding was used for centuries in America until the advent of modern building techniques became more prevalent. Vinyl siding clapboard profiles are available in single, double, or triple rows or courses at various heights.
Dutchlap was very popular in the Mid-Atlantic region of America dating back to early settler days, its origin dates back to Northern European areas where wood frame construction was dominant. Dutchlap siding provides very strong shadow lines and is a very popular alternate to standard clapboard fascade. Dutchlap vinyl siding has multiple courses with up to 5 reveals.
Beaded siding was developed to provide even more dramatic shadow lines by adding a rounded bead at the bottom of a single clapboard course. This variation on traditional clapboard siding originated in the Southern United States and was commonly used in building pre-1880. Beaded vinyl siding replicates the handcrafted bead that was originally produced in wood. These reveals are typically six to seven inch single course.
Insulated (backed) siding is a popular product that increases the exterior wall R-value. This characteristic also improves the impact resistance and helps replicate the feel of real wood plank.
Vinyl siding is also produced with specialty cladding profiles. The categories include:
Vertical Siding
Shingles / Shapes
Shakes
Vertical siding typically can replicate board and batten. Shingle siding became popular in NE states in the 19th.century which can be used in whole house applications or accent bands or trim. Shingle profiles can be square, hexagon, fishscales, as well as other shapes to create the desired architectural look. Vinyl shake profiles are manufactured as single or double course with 6 to 10 reveals. Additionally, the soffit material, trim, and accessories are manufactured in vinyl to complement the siding. All the products are available in different textures to help simulate the desired architectural effect. Essentially, the products can be utilized to create a modern day classical home without the maintenance of wood products.
